Boating
& Sailing - A seven-day trip aboard the sail training ship Spirit of
Adventure (NZ) at age 16 instilled a life-long love of sailing.
Our current yacht, a Noelex 30, is moored at Kuring-gai Motor Yacht
Club, Cottage Point, Sydney, and we regularly cruise the waters of Cowan
Creek.
As
well as book reviews and profiles of boating personalities, such as Jesse
Martin, I also write humorous articles about the problems associated with
boating and cruising with a young family.
My boating
articles have been published in Australia in Modern Boating, Club
Marine, Australian Boating, Australian Yachting, Cruising Helmsman,
Multihull World and Sydney Afloat, in America in Sailing
and Latitudes & Attitudes, in the UK in Yachting Monthly and
in South Africa in Sailing.

Travel
- I love travel, both with my family and on my own. From weekends away to
longer vacations, from relaxing getaways to adventure holidays. I enjoy
sharing my stories with readers, whether they want to follow in my footsteps
or enjoy the experience from their armchair.
Locations
of special interest are Cowan Creek in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park,
Sydney and Papua New Guinea. I am a
member of the Australian Society of Travel Writers and New Zealand Travel
Communicators (Travcom), and my travel articles
have appeared in magazines and newspaper travel sections in Australia and
overseas.

Ku-ring-gai
Chase National Park –
I have spent many years cruising the waterways
within the park and utilizing its many walking tracks.
Contact with park volunteers, Cottage Point residents and Kuring-gai
Motor Yacht Club members, some of whose families were early settlers in the
area, has provided additional background information.
My articles on the park have been published in newspapers and magazines
in Australia and overseas.

Macular
Degeneration (Age-related Blindness) – This modern epidemic will
eventually affect one in three people over the age of 50.
Having watched my mother suffer the devastating effects of this
disease, which has no cure, I am determined to raise awareness of the disease
and alert people to the preventative measures they can take.
I am in regular contact with the Macular Degeneration Foundation in
Australia and keep up to date with research developments.
My article ‘Vegetable oils linked to blindness’, which appeared in
The Sydney Morning Herald, sparked the recent public discussion on the
relationship between vegetable oils and MD.

Feet and Footwear
– A passion for shoes led me into the footwear industry.
For 12 years I worked for a leading fashion footwear company, as a
retail manager, buyer and ultimately buying manager.
These roles demanded a thorough knowledge of footwear design and
manufacture as well as the anatomy of feet and shoe fitting techniques.
I dealt with all levels of footwear, from budget to luxury, including
labels such as Manolo Blahnik. I
have attended the Footwear Fitting Course run by the National Footwear
Retailers' Association and can write on foot health and shoe fitting for both
adults and children. I
also collect footwear books and am a regular reviewer for Footwear News
Australia.

Business Travel
– Having travelled regularly as a footwear buyer, both nationally
and internationally, often up to five weeks at a time, I am familiar with both
the problems and the pleasures business travel can provide.
As well as informative articles that include travel tips I also write
humorous articles that look at the not-so-glamorous side of business travel.

Profiles
– I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and telling their
stories to entertain and inspire.
Highlights include profiles on sailor Jesse Martin and businesswoman
Sue Ismiel, founder of Nad’s.

Humour
– I love a good laugh and enjoy providing readers with one too – even
if it is at my own expense (or that of my family).
Humorous topics include business travel, boating, parenting and pets.
